The Eco Conscious Home

If you want to have an eco-conscious home, you have a variety of options to choose from. There are numerous building products and appliances that are designed to help reduce energy usage and reduce waste that goes into local trash dumps. By investing in and using these products, you will make a significant contribution to the environment.
One easy place to start is with your light bulbs. Energy efficient bulbs are designed to use less energy and last for years. By installing them throughout your home, you can already see energy savings. The next step is to check your home's insulation. By having adequate insulation in your walls, you can keep more warmth in your home and use your heater less. Your windows are another source of heat loss. Newer windows are made to reflect ultra-violet light and prevent warmth from escaping the home. Storm doors are an additional source of energy savings, as they can help to seal the home against heat loss as well. The newer models are designed to seal tighter around the door frame, preventing heat loss and drafts.
Additionally, you can invest in appliances that don't waste electricity. Manufacturers now produce washers, dryers, hot water heaters and dishwashers that are more efficient. For examples, the newer front-loading washers use less energy and water when doing laundry. This can mean double savings for homeowners. Newer hot water heaters are designed to provide hot water on demand. They are smaller, use energy more efficiently and save you more on your monthly utility bill.
If you want to find alternative forms of energy to power your home, you can install solar panels on your home. These are now available in kits through various retailers that you can put in yourself or pay a professional to install. They can be installed on the roof or on the ground, depending on the design of your home. These panels are excellent sources of clean, renewable energy that doesn't make unnecessary use of fossil fuels.
Another option that you can do is a small wind turbine. These are perfect for areas that have consistent wind patterns can produce a viable alternate source of energy. Once installed, the homeowner can often make a profit off of extra energy that they don't use. Many times, local utility companies will pay homeowners with a wind turbine for the extra power. The investment for one pays for itself in your savings on electricity bills.
One of the primary advantages of investing in these improvements are the many tax credits that you can receive from the federal government. These vary depending on the type of improvements that you make and the limitations on the credit. Additionally, your local utility company may give you a rebate on appliances that you install to make your home more efficient. You may have to provide documentation of the purchase. These advantages make putting these improvements in your home well worth the investment. You will also see savings in your bank account as you reduce your use of standard electricity
